Barry can easily add a hyperlink in his document by using the Ctrl+K shortcut. If he later tries to use the hyperlink (Ctrl+Click), he gets a message that says "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." Barry is the only one using this computer; there is no other admin. He wonders why this is happening and how to fix it.
It is important to consider the type of hyperlinks you are creating. Are they to other documents or other files on your local computer, or are they to resources on the Internet? There is a good chance that the error message is related only to hyperlinks that access the Internet. Assuming that is the case, first check to make sure that the URL used in the hyperlink is constructed properly. Does it use HTTPS in the URL instead of HTTP? (It should, in almost all instances.) Can you access the URL through a browser?
Speaking of browsers, when you Ctrl+Click an Internet hyperlink in a Word document, the program hands the request off to Windows, which in turn hands the request off to the default browser. The error message that Barry is seeing is likely being generated either by Windows or by the browser that Windows is trying to work with. You may be able to solve the issue simply by checking if Windows has the default browser set properly. Follow these steps in Windows:
At this point, restart Word and try to Ctrl+Click on the hyperlink again.
If the problem persists, you may need to do a minor repair on Word, itself. Follow these steps:
Office makes sure that all internal settings are proper, which should fix any problems with how hyperlinks are handled by Word or other Office apps.
